Practical guide
How to ask about your options
Published waiting-time data can help you prepare better questions. It cannot guarantee that your care will change, but it can support a clearer conversation.
Questions you can ask
- Can you confirm where I am currently referred?
- Is my referral routine or urgent?
- Are there any clinically suitable alternative providers?
- Is there anything missing from my referral?
- When should I chase again if I do not hear anything?
Keep it respectful and specific
Explain what you are waiting for, how long you have waited, and what you are asking the GP or hospital to check. Use the draft letter tool to prepare a starting message.
